About
Backend engineer, mostly interested in what happens when things fail.
I’m Abhinav, a backend engineer in Hyderabad. At Khumbu Systems I design and own the integration services between ordering platforms, Uber Eats and RBI’s apps, and the point-of-sale systems of Burger King, Popeyes, Tim Hortons, Chipotle and Wingstop: about 12,000 stores across 17 markets. Orders, quotes, cancellations, pricing, and the menu and store-status syncs that keep them all agreeing.
Integration work teaches you that every partner retries, every queue redelivers, and every dependency eventually times out. Most of what I enjoy is in that layer: idempotent consumers, caches that degrade to misses rather than errors, shutdown ordering, failover. I led our cache migration to ElastiCache Serverless, and wrote up what it taught us.
To go further than my day job needed, I built a real-time multiplayer chess platform as a production system: a clock that cannot drift, moves that apply exactly once under contention, games that survive a rolling deploy, and a written report behind every number I quote about it.
How I work
Measure before claiming
A number without its environment and method is a guess. I write down where a figure came from, and label estimates as estimates.
Failure is a feature to test
Timeouts, retries, redeliveries and restarts are where systems actually break, so I break them on purpose and read what happens.
The simplest design that is correct
A modular monolith before microservices; a database constraint before a distributed lock. Infrastructure is added when there is a reason.
Write down the why
Decisions are worth more with their alternatives and trade-offs attached. That is what lets a design be defended, and changed later.
